Quilled flower arrangement in orange

Flowers and sunbird, framed

This flower arrangement in shades of orange was inspired by the flowers of lily, mum (Chrysanthemum), rose, pot marigold (Calendula) and flame vine (Pyrostegia/Bignonia Venusta).

Quilled flowers, detail

I should mention that although I had made a sketch for this composition and prepared the quilled flowers, I experienced difficulties assembling it. Usually I add an insect to each of my flower arrangements. For this project I wanted to create an orange colored butterfly, but then decided to make a small bird instead.

Quilled sunbird and flowers

So, here's my little sunbird made of narrow, 1/16"-wide (1.5 mm) paper strips.

Quilled sunbird, detail

The petals of the chrysanthemum flowers were made in the following way: first, I made "eye" shapes using 1/8-inch paper strips (3 mm), and then cut each in half lengthwise. The rose petals I made of a special Korean paper which resembles crepe paper. This is my first attempt at using this paper type and I'm very pleased with the result. For the flame vine flowers I created paper cones, and then attached to each either petals, stamens and carpels (for an open flower), or a semi-sphere (for a bud).

Roses, flame vine and mum flowers, detail

Size of the finished picture is 9x9 inches (23x23 cm).

This is so SPLENDID! Just like you Inna I paint and cut my own strips. I always have problems with grape rolls they never turn out smooth like yours. My 3d domes always look uneven and very layered. I am so fed up of trying them again and getting the same effect. Can you suggest something to make more even and smoother 3d Domes? I will be very grateful for your help Inna.

Thanks a lot everybody!

@Anonymous (C- India)
Using good quilling paper can definitely help. Try also shifting the strip a bit as you roll it, building the dome up from the very beginning instead of pushing the coil afterwards.

@deepa
Sorry, but I have no idea where quilling supplies can be bought in your country. Try ordering them on the Web, there is a number of good sites like Quilled Creations, Lake City Crafts, Custom Quilling by Denise, Whimsiquills, etc. Have a look also at the "Do-it-Yourself Quilling section" of this page: http://increations.blogspot.com/p/paper-quilling.html.

@Sathya
When assembling a flower, I fix its petals at an angle by putting them into a cup-like object of a suitable size. See the sixth photo on http://increations.blogspot.com/2011/03/cherry-blossom-framed-paper-quilling.html. Glue is applied where the petals touch each other.

So beautiful! I like your roses here so much! They look very natural. They seem to be done in a new, unusual way for you. As I`m always looking eagerly for your tutorials, I hope you`ll give a new one on making them.And on butterflies and other insects you make so excellently, if you have time and desire to share your special methods.
Your works are always atmospheric, if it can be said this way to show my perception of them. Best wishes!
